The American crocodile, scientific name crocodylus acutus, is one of several crocodilian species native to the Americas and the only one native to Jamaica. They inhabit wetland habitats primarily along the south coast of Jamaica from St. Thomas to Westmoreland. Notable areas include Holland Bay and Black River. Though not as prevalent, they can also be found on the north coast in areas such as Bogue, St. James and mangrove areas in Trelawny. Being semiaquatic animals, American crocodiles are tied to their wetland habitat, out of regular contact with people. They prefer to avoid the presence of humans and in normal circumstances will remain hidden when people are around. So much so that most Jamaicans have never actually seen a single crocodile in the wild. Encounters between people and crocodiles however do happen due to circumstances such as fishing in river habitats and encroachment for development on wetland habitats.
Chances of encounter increase in the rainy season when the line between natural wetland areas is less clearly defined, and crocodiles may wander beyond their usual range. During these times of heavy rain and subsequent floods, wandering crocodiles may find their way into manmade drains and water catchment which become isolated in the dry season. These populations are usually the first encounter most people have with crocodiles and can be very concerning to them. The national environment and planning agency (NEPA) and other devoted private actors such as the black river safari tours and Holland Bay crocodile sanctuary rescue and nurse and reintroduce crocodiles to safe habitats. These natural habitats have however been in ever decline as demand increases to use these areas for resort development, settlement, and other infrastructures projects.

Though incidents of attacks are rare, it is important to be vigilant in known and potential crocodile inhabited areas. These are powerful wild animals that may attack in protest of feeling threatened or in protection of their young.
With females averaging ~8f and males averaging ~14f in length. American crocodiles are the largest land animal native to Jamaica. A popular question is whether Jamaica has any alligator? No, Jamaica only as crocodiles which one tell is by their exposed upper and lower tooth when their jaw is closed. Alligators have sockets that hide away their lower teeth exposing only the upper ones when their mouth is closed.
